Winter Skin: Why does it feel so uncomfortable?

Does your skin feel tight after cleansing?

A little rough, more like sandpaper than smooth?

Maybe it looks red, feels sore, or just refuses to settle.

You’re not alone. Winter is one of the hardest times of year for skin, and it’s something I see every single day in clinic.

Cold air outside, heating indoors, hot showers and lower humidity all quietly dry the skin out. Even people who normally have no skin issues can suddenly feel sensitive or uncomfortable at this time of year.

What’s often happening underneath is that the skin barrier is struggling.

I like to explain the skin barrier as a brick wall.

Your skin cells are the bricks, and the mortar that holds them together is made up of lipids called ceramides.

When that mortar is strong, the wall is solid. Skin feels smooth, calm and comfortable.

When ceramides are depleted, gaps appear. Moisture escapes more easily, irritants get in, and skin starts to feel tight, rough, red or sore.

This isn’t your skin being difficult. It’s your skin asking for support.

In winter, skin usually doesn’t need stronger products or more actives. In fact, pushing the skin too hard can often make things worse. What it really needs is feeding.

Ceramides play a huge role here. They help rebuild the mortar between the bricks, reduce moisture loss and restore comfort to the skin. Cold weather and indoor heating can strip ceramides away faster than usual, which is why skin can suddenly feel dry or reactive even if you are moisturising.

This is where barrier repair skincare can make such a difference.

I often recommend a repair focused routine using skin identical ingredients, such as those found in Dermaviduals. Their Repair Kit is designed to support the skin barrier rather than challenge it, helping to replace lost lipids and calm the skin.

Clients often tell me their skin feels less tight, less red and more comfortable. Makeup sits better, skin feels smoother, and that constant uncomfortable feeling starts to ease.

Winter skin isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what your skin actually needs right now.

If your skin feels uncomfortable, listen to it. Feed it. Support it. And if you’re unsure what your skin needs this winter, I’m always happy to help guide you back to calm, comfortable skin.
